In Mukuru Village, planting medicinal trees has become more than an environmental activity. It has created an opportunity for students and community members to learn about biodiversity, traditional medicine, conservation, and the importance of protecting local natural resources.
Through the partnership between Tupendane Foundation and Initiatives (TUFOI), Kitumusote Foundation, and Mukuru Eco Tented Camp, 1,000 seedlings of local medicinal trees were raised and distributed within Mukuru Village.
With a project cost of TZS 1,000,000, the initiative brought together environmental conservation and community education, encouraging people to understand the value of local plant species and the traditional knowledge associated with them.
Instead of learning about biodiversity and conservation only through books or classroom discussions, students and community members had an opportunity to engage with nature directly and understand the importance of planting, protecting, and caring for local trees.
“When we plant a tree, we are not only protecting nature. We are also preserving knowledge, strengthening our communities, and giving future generations something valuable to inherit.”
The initiative provided an opportunity to raise awareness about local medicinal plants and their importance in traditional knowledge. Participants learned about the value of protecting plant species that have been used by communities for generations.
