Why volunteer

Alongside, Not Instead Of

TUFOI works with schools, families and local partners in Usa River, Arusha. Volunteers add skills and capacity to work our local team is already doing — they do not take the place of local staff. We match each volunteer to work that fits their skills and what communities actually need.

Volunteer Remotely

You do not have to come to Tanzania to be useful to us. Some of the most valuable support we receive is skills-based work done from somewhere else entirely — a designer giving us an evening, a writer helping with a donor report, a developer improving our website.

If you work in design, writing, video, marketing, data, fundraising or software, tell us what you can offer and how much time you have. We will find work that matches it.

How It Works

1

Tell us about yourself

Complete the form below with your skills, interests, availability and what you would like to contribute.

2

We talk it through

Our team reviews your application and contacts you to discuss opportunities that match your skills and our current needs.

3

You prepare

We send you information about the project, what is expected, the community context and practical preparations. For on-site placements we arrange your accommodation.

4

You join the work

You work alongside our local team and community partners, with orientation, supervision and ongoing support from TUFOI.

5

You stay connected

After your placement we stay in touch. Many volunteers continue to support or advocate for the projects they worked on.

Accommodation & Practical Arrangements

TUFOI fully organises accommodation for both individual volunteers and groups. On-site volunteers stay with host families. Rooms are comfortable and may be shared with one or two other volunteers, and are within walking, cycling or a short bus ride of the project. Two meals a day are provided.

International volunteers arrange their own flights, travel insurance, visas and vaccinations. Talk to us before booking anything so we can confirm dates and placement details.

Who Can Volunteer

We welcome individuals, couples, families, students, researchers and groups, including companies, colleges and associations. Our programmes are flexible and volunteers can arrive and depart at any time of year.

Short-term placements, long-term placements and student internships are all available. Where your institution requires it, we can confirm your placement in writing.

What We Ask of Volunteers

  • Respect for local communities, cultures and the people we work with
  • Adherence to TUFOI's safeguarding policy, particularly around children
  • Reliability and clear communication about your availability
  • Confidentiality about the people and families you meet
  • Working collaboratively with local staff rather than independently
  • Permission sought before taking or publishing photographs of anyone
  • An understanding that sustainable change takes time

Placements involving direct work with children require additional screening. We will explain what is needed when we discuss your application.
