Science Laboratory Transforms Learning at Bethlehem Star School

The establishment of a modern science laboratory at Bethlehem Star Pre & Primary School, made possible through the generous support of Akina e.V. of Germany and facilitated by Tupendane Foundation and Initiatives (TUFOI), has transformed science education for more than 540 learners.

The laboratory has created a practical, hands-on learning environment where students can explore Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) beyond textbooks and classroom theory. Through experiments, observation, problem-solving, and teamwork, learners are developing a deeper understanding of scientific concepts while building the confidence and curiosity needed to pursue future careers in science and technology.

The project has also strengthened teachers' practical teaching skills and created equal opportunities for both girls and boys to participate in scientific experiments and inquiry-based learning.


Our Science Laboratory Changed the Way We Learn

My name is Neema, and I am a Grade 6 student at Bethlehem Star Pre & Primary School.

Before our new science laboratory was built, we mostly learned science from textbooks, drawings, and explanations on the classroom blackboard. It was sometimes difficult to understand how experiments worked because we had never seen or used the real equipment.

Today, everything has changed.

Thanks to the science laboratory supported by Akina e.V. of Germany through TUFOI, we can now learn science by doing.

In Biology, we use microscopes to observe plant and animal cells and other tiny living things. We have learned how to prepare simple slides and compare different samples. Seeing things that we previously only read about in books has made science more exciting and easier to understand.

During Chemistry lessons, we use beakers, test tubes, measuring cylinders, and other laboratory equipment to carry out safe experiments. We mix solutions, observe reactions, and learn why some substances change colour or produce bubbles.

In Physics, we use electricity kits to build simple circuits using batteries, wires, bulbs, and switches. Instead of simply reading about electricity, we can see how it works. We also use different tools to explore forces and motion, helping us understand scientific principles in everyday life.

Environmental science activities allow us to test water and soil samples from around our school. We are learning about clean water, environmental protection, and the effects of pollution on our communities.

One of the most exciting parts is working with robotics kits and digital learning tools. We can build simple machines, solve problems, and work together as a team. These activities make us dream about becoming engineers, doctors, scientists, and inventors.

Our teachers have also gained new skills through practical science training. Every week, we have opportunities to perform experiments that help us understand our lessons much better.

The science laboratory has made learning enjoyable. We are no longer afraid of science because we can see, touch, test, and discover things for ourselves.

We are grateful to Akina e.V. of Germany and TUFOI for giving us this opportunity. The laboratory has opened our minds, increased our confidence, and inspired us to believe that we can achieve our dreams and contribute to the future of Tanzania.


 

A Teacher's Story: Bringing Science to Life

My name is Kelvin, and I teach Science at Bethlehem Star Pre & Primary School.

For many years, teaching science was one of our greatest challenges. Although the curriculum required practical learning, we had very few materials and resources. Most lessons depended on drawings, textbook illustrations, and verbal explanations.

Our students could memorize scientific concepts, but they rarely had the opportunity to experience them through practical activities.

Everything changed when Akina e.V. of Germany, through the support of Tupendane Foundation and Initiatives (TUFOI), established and equipped our science laboratory.

Today, our classrooms have become places of discovery.

With microscopes, students can observe plant and animal cells for themselves instead of only looking at illustrations. Using beakers, test tubes, measuring cylinders, and other equipment, they can safely conduct simple chemistry experiments and understand how substances react.

Electricity kits allow students to build circuits, light bulbs, and explore the principles of electricity through hands-on activities.

The laboratory has transformed not only our students but also me as a teacher. The training provided through the project strengthened my confidence in conducting practical lessons and using inquiry-based teaching methods.

Instead of simply explaining scientific concepts, I can now guide students to:

  • Ask questions
  • Make predictions
  • Conduct experiments
  • Record observations
  • Analyse results
  • Draw their own conclusions

The impact is visible every day. Students are more engaged, ask thoughtful questions, and participate actively in lessons. Their understanding of science has improved, and many now express ambitions to become doctors, engineers, environmental scientists, researchers, and inventors.

As a teacher, there is no greater joy than seeing young learners develop curiosity and confidence through practical learning.

This science laboratory is more than a building filled with equipment. It is a place where future scientists are inspired, talents are nurtured, and dreams become possible.
